Hinduism is one of the oldest and major religions in the world. It is also known as Sanatan Dharma. It is the only religion in the world in which so many variations (branches) come to be seen, but still it is the only religion in the world which has accurately represented Brahm(The supreme power) .
The main basis of any religion is its religious texts and the knowledge contained in it. Let us know about the top 10 religious texts to understand hinduism.
1) The Bhagavad Gita - The bhagavad gita is the most popular religious text of Hinduism which is read in the whole world. It was given by Lord Krishna himself in his preaching to Arjuna. In this, a very beautiful description of karma yoga and Gyan yog is found.Gita gives the knowledge to understand karma and attain the ultimate truth of life.
2)The Vedas - Veda is the greatest text of Hinduism. There are four veds including rigved,yajurved,samved and atharvved of which Rigveda is the largest. Vedas are the source of ultimate knowledge.
The Rigveda currently consists of 10 mandalas, 1028 hymns and 10600 verses. Gayatri Mantra and Shri Sukta are also taken from Rigveda itself. Rigveda is the oldest text in the world.
Similarly, in Yajurveda the worship of gods is prescribed by Yagya, in Samaveda by music and in Atharvaveda, the science of Jyotis Tantra and Ayurveda is included.
3)The Upnishads - The Upanishads are quotes from the Vedas and are considered to be the essence of the Vedas. There are 1008 Upanishads out of which 208 are available but 11 of them are major
The Upanishads are the main parts of the Prastanatrayi (the Gita, the Upanishads and the Brahmasutras are called Prasthanatrayi). The Karma Marga has been described in detail in the Upanishads.
4)The Ramcharitrmanas - The ramcharitra manas written by gowswami tulsidas is one of the prominent books of hinduism which discribs the life of lord ram that how they make earth free from demon king ravana this entire book depicts the life character of Lord Rama. But there is also a spiritual philosophy of
Ramcharitmanas.
5)The Brahmsutra - It is believed that the Brahmasutra was composed by Maharishi Badrayana, but many sages wrote commentaries on it. There are a total of 555 verses in the 4 chapters of the Brahmasutra. But it is one of the major texts of Vedanta.
But due to the writing of many commentaries, it is difficult to come out with one philosophical opinion.
6)The Astavakra gita - The Astavakra Gita is taken from the dialogue between King Janak and Maharshi Astavakra. In this maharshi astaavakra answers the questions of King Janak and gives him the knowledge related to salvation, bondage and self-knowledge. Astavakra emphasizes on knowin ‘self’.
